Tasar Sericulture Development and
Extension Programme
Non mulberry sericulture holds great promise for the forestry as a supplementary
activity. On one hand,it can help in arresting forest destruction and on the
other, it permits gainful utilization of this vast natural wealth.
Tasar
culture is a forest based industry uniquely suited to the economy and social
structure of the developing countries because of its minimum investment
requirement and high employment potential for tribal and rural people.
In
M.P., the tasar cocoon production activities are taken up in Balaghat, Mandla ,
Dindori, Seoni, Hoshangabad, Jabalpur, Jhabua, Sidhi etc districts.
Tasar rearing is outdoor rearing. The beneficiaries conduct silkworm rearing at
Govt. tasar silk farms/forest areas under plantation where tasar food plants
such as -T. arjun (Arjun), T. tomentosa (Saja) etc. are available.
FACILITIES
PROVIDED BY THE DIRECTORATE OF SERICULTURE

NATURE GROWN
TASAR COCOONS |

Nature grown tasar cocoons are produced naturally in forest areas which are
having tasar food plants - Arjun, Saja and Sal.
In M.P., nature grown cocoon producing districts are Mandla, Balaghat, Seoni,
Shahdol, Hoshangabad etc. The cocoons are collected by local villagers and sold
in the local "Haat- bazars".
Directorate of Sericulture organises camps every year in forest areas for
multiplication of cocoons.

Eri Sericulture Development and
Extension Programme
| |
Eri also
known as Endi or Errandi, is produced by the Eri silkworm feeding mainly on
the leaves of castor plants. |
Eri silk
production offers employment opportunities for castor growers and provides
additional income with no significant additional investment. |
Agro climatic
condition of Madhya Pradesh is congenial for Eri food plant cultivation and
silkworm rearing. The activities are taken in Jhabua, Hoshangabad, Betul,
Sehore, etc.districts in 2005-06. |
The
Directorate of Sericulture is committed to facilitate spread of ericulture as
a tool for poverty eradication and means of livelihood by way of seed
production, shell production and value addition of eri. |
Harvesting of
castor leaves upto 30-40% for rearing causes no loss in the field of castor
seed, augmenting income from castor seed production and ericulture.
Eri cocoons
do not have continuous filament and hence, are spun . Elegantly designed eri
shawls and chaddars are quite popular because of their thermal properties. Eri
silk spinning provides employment to rural poor. |
Recent
development in design and product development have opened greater
opportunities for eri products in domestic and overseas markets. |
